About our 2019 Grants

Welcome to the Luol Deng Foundation South Sudan Diaspora (SSD) 2019 Grant! There are three types of grants to apply for:

Small grants for amounts between $500-$1,000, available three times each year.
Open from:

  • · 19th July to 19th August
  • · 1st November to 30th November

Medium grants for amounts between $1001 -$2,000, available twice each year.
Open from:

  • · 19th July to 19th August
  • · 1st November to 30th November

Large grants for amounts over $2,001 and up to a maximum of $5,000.
Next open date:

  • · 19th July to 19th August

**Please note that all awardees and their work will be highlighted and shared during the South Sudan Unite events each year.

The Application Process

You must apply by completing our application form online via the website. Before completing the form, please read How to Apply and the Eligibility Requirements below.

Once we have received your application, together with any supporting documents, we will assess whether it complies with the Trustee’s guidelines.

Accepted applications are considered at committee meetings. Once the committee have made a decision, we will write to all applicants.

We receive many more applications than we unfortunately have resources for. Therefore, the number of applicants we are able to help is limited. Please bear in mind that the decision of the Committee is final.

As part of our decision-making process, we reserve the right to visit/call applying organizations to view the project first hand, or speak to those involved.

Please note, if your application is successful, you will be required to confirm receipt of your grant. Failure to do so within two weeks of receipt of a grant checks may result in your organization becoming ineligible to receive further grants for up to five years.

What Organizations are Eligible

Grant applications for the following organizations will be considered:

Registered Non-Profit Organizations in the USA (including small clubs and societies)

Community Center (Non-fee paying, state sector schools only. Independent/private; fee paying schools will not be considered)

Grants cannot be provided to:

Individuals
Private Business

What Activities are Eligible

Grant applications supporting the following activities will be considered:

Local: Work that has clear benefits to the local (SS) community/environment

Youth: Work with young people/children

Education: Education/schools (e.g after school program, homework club, tutoring )

Special education needs

People with disabilities

What Activities are Ineligible

Grant applications are NOT considered if they support the following purposes or activities:

Administrative/Core Costs: Core funding; General running costs; Sponsorship or advertising; Major building works

Religious/Political projects

Research

Travel: Overseas projects; Travel

Used Vehicle Costs: Purchase of second-hand vehicles

Motor Company Limited: employees and retirees of Motor Company Limited

Preference Given To

Grant applications will be considered for projects being undertaken/expenditure being made in all South Sudanese Diaspora Communities, but the following are given a higher weighting:

Minnesota & surrounding states

Phoenix, Arizona

Dallas, Texas

Omaha, Nebraska

States with a relatively large number of the target population

How to Apply

You will need the following items to complete the online application:

  1. An introductory letter to upload as a PDF document with your application
  2. Any supporting documents you would like to include, also saved as PDF documents to upload with your application
  3. If you are apply for a large grant, your latest annual finance report to upload with your application.
  4. Answers prepared for these five questions, which you will be asked to complete during the online application process.
  5. General contact and organizational information, which you will be asked for on the first page of the online application process.

Please complete ALL questions. If a question does not apply to your application, please state N/A. You must be able to submit all parts of your first-stage proposal electronically (this includes your introductory letter, organization details sheet, answers to our five questions and your most recent annual accounts).

Answers may be continued on a separate sheet if necessary, uploaded as a PDF document. Supporting documents (e.g. budget submissions, project outlines, quotations for equipment etc) must be submitted with your application if appropriate. All uploaded documents must be in pdf format. This helps to preserve the integrity of your application and makes it easier for us to see your information the way you would like us to.

Please submit copies of your organization’s most recent Report and Accounts in PDF format with all large grant applications, where available. Please bear in mind that we do not return any documents. However, if you request the return of specific items, we will do our best to comply.

Applications are accepted on the understanding that successful organizations may appear in possible publicity that the Luol Deng Foundation produce.

The Foundation encourages and welcomes any appropriate public acknowledgement of grants, including the use of the Foundation’s logo on any publicity about the grant and/or on any relevant materials that the organization may produce.
